CONNECT WITH VERA: Destination of Nature
Naturally
Natural spaces by the sea.
Vera has a privileged setting where you can enjoy Mother nature next to the Mediterranean sea. This landscape is natural heritage made up of two wetlands that are the arteries of these landscapes. It is a space where numerous ecosystems coexist and which are a source of wellbeing for us and for the planet.

The Salar de los Canos
Located near El Playazo, this coastal lagoon originates from the waters of the Rambla del Algarrobo as they are naturally retained by the formation of a sandy bank before reaching the sea. The Salar de los Canos is an urban wetland, which is more than 57 hectors in size. It constitutes the largest extension of natural green area of the entire central plain of the eastern Almería, as it contains 12 Habitats of Community Interest (HCI). This area is an ecosystem that constitutes the environmental enhancement of Vera by being a huge green lung for all its surroundings.
These permanent waters are home to an extremely diverse fauna which is especially important for aquatic birds looking for refuge and food. What is also noteworthy here is the presence of the grey teal, the white-headed malvasia and the squeaker heron, the black tortoise and the runner toad, all of which are considered endangered species in the Andalusian Catalogue of Threatened Species. That is why this area forms part of the wetlands that are constantly monitored by the Wetland Bird Recovery and Conservation Plan. It has also recently been included in the Catalogue of Wetlands of the Junta de Andalucía, which entails special protection.
The Port of Rey Lagoon
This wetland is formed in the Puerto Rey Beach, where the mouth of the Antas River forms as a small lagoon and where, amongst the reed beds and bulrushes, a significant number of birds and ducks rest and take refuge during their migration between Africa and Europe.
To the south of the lagoon is Las Marinas beach, which borders the town of Garrucha. A large promenade connects the lagoon to this fishing village. While to the north, it runs into the beach of Puerto Rey.
The Laguna de Puerto Rey is included in the suggestions for places of Importance of Community interest (SCI) of the Andalusian Autonomous Community.
